The LED Light Wall at Bath Spa University

The new “Commons” building at Bath Spa is a state-of-the-art teaching facility provides cutting edge teaching facilities for 4,500 students.

The LED Light Wall a public art work seamlessly integrated into the fabric of the façade. The natural imagery created by current students links the content to both the surrounding natural beauty and the student community. This unique blend of modernity and history sets the project apart.

In keeping with the sustainability and environmental impact discussions with English Heritage and Natural England, the façade is designed to be a sympathetic reflection of the environment around it. The changing of the seasons, time of day, weather and temperature is echoed in the speed, saturation and colour pallet displayed. This demanded Ethernet control of the whole façade is an essential element of this. Indeed current stage lighting students at the university are being encouraged to generate and display their own LED content light shows.

From a design perspective there was a number of major challenges to overcome. This evolved into a highly bespoke light box system.

Design Requirements: • EPC Rating ‘Category A’ • BREEAM ‘Excellent’ • Front access for maintenance with a “Secret fix” system custom development of cladding fixing. • Flush with terracotta cladding. • Hidden Aluminium Frame structurally bonded to back of glass. • Ventilation to prevent condensation • 1500 Individually addressable DMX channels. • Seamless integration of power and data units within the light box and façade • UV stable digital print.

Digitally printed images of student artwork form a vibrant mosaic of colour to engage students throughout the day. This has been reverse printed to anti UV clear vinyl for extended lifetime. To present saturated colours when illuminated a 200% double digital print has been used. The LED Light is diffused with specialist high light transmission film backing up the print.

With intensive competition from other manufacturers NES Lightline demonstrated unflinching commitment to the project and through the design process. Expertise in LEDs, Control Gear, Light box fabrication, metal bending, anodising, Digital Print, Structural bonding of glass and fitting to site tolerances of millimetres. Keeping all of these processes in house proved vital to control quality, build time and costs. The final result was a project delivered on time and within budget.

Atlantic Pavillion

Illuminated Reception features. NES were thrilled to be a part of the refurbishment of Atlantic Pavilion; part of the Category 1 listed Albert Docks, the highest profile element of Liverpool’s extensive and historic docklands. Refurbishment of the 2nd floor office and ground floor reception area included NES illuminating the curved reception desk with 6 LED Light Panels. Frameless light boxes were manufactured and installed to the lift shaft and the iconic building’s interior archways, using NES’ specialist aluminium hanging system. Each Light panel uses 24 volt LEDs connected to a dimmable transformer. The panels were diffused with opal polycarbonate with stylish black returns; with the overall effect complimenting the historic nature of the building.

RGB LED Light Wall - Reception Area

Specification:

Controlled by a DMX system which includes a stand alone DMX-PC Controller and wall mounted customer interface. This allows the colour, intensity and brightness mix to be adjusted to suit the time of day and ambiance.

Extremely visible through the glass façade of the building.

This is constructed from 6 Ultra Light Panels 1024 x 2191 with LEDs both vertical edges.

The glass is 13.5mm toughened and laminated with an “Arctic Snow” interlayer for a robust, untinted and smoothly diffused light.

The total depth of the unit is 95mm. The diffusion space between light panel and glass is 50mm.

The aluminium trim has an orbital sanding finish.

Westfield

Westfield, Stratford City – 3200 sq. m illuminated soffits and bulkheads with LED light panels behind polycarbonate and glass bricks.

NES was commissioned by Westfield's in-house architects to design, manufacture and install two types of unique bulkhead feature panels (bricks and glass) to fit around the internal areas of the central and northern arcades of the shopping and lifestyle centre.

In doing so, NES has created the largest flat panels LED light installation in the UK to date. Over 3,200 sq. m of LED light panels were used, covering a staggering 3km.

NES designed and manufactured all the hanging systems, combined glazing systems, building cladding systems and of course, the flat panel lighting which itself represents over three years of in-house R&D.

NES were essentially given a three month install period but in real time managed to complete everything in just over eight weeks!

Lewisham Shopping Centre

RGB Colour Changing LightWall When asked, NES jumped at the opportunity of creating an eye-catching entrance way to the Lewisham Shopping Centre revamp. The result is a stunning high impact colour changing lightwall over 40 meters in length! The 128 Lightpanels are individually controlled with mini DMX cards and pre-programmed to smoothly run through 4 sequences. NES combined Alucobond wall cladding and flat panel RGB lighting technology to create this striking feature. This particular type of system is designed to provide a very low maintenance solution, which architects and clients alike are eager to obtain. NES continue to be market-leaders in their industry by investing heavily in the research and development of flat panel lighting technology.

British Land

Cheesegrater challenge Working with British Land, Laing O'Rourke and top London design consultants NES manufactured and installed this impressive hording at 122 Leadenhall Street. Direct to media digital print on our wide format machines allowed for rapid production of the new London panorama depicted along the side. On to the 3mm Aluminium Composite Material a tinted laminate provided depth to the metallic blue surface effect. LED Light Panels provided bright even illumination for the illuminated sections. The overall thickness of the hording had to be under 40mm due to the pavement and massive structural steels of the building. The built up text was cut, rolled, welded and powder coated in our metal works department. Linear LEDs were mounted in the soffit of the hording to provide narrow depth low glare illumination for pedestrians on the walkway. Additional elements of this project included: Graphics to construction briefing rooms Freestanding 12m Interactive LED Light Wall to the marketing suite. This was constructred of reverse printed glass.

Park Lane

A Luxury Boutique Hotel NES were overjoyed to be part of the refurbishment of 45 Park Lane. The luxury 5 star Boutique Hotel in Mayfair, London from The Dorcester Collection, has sought after views overlooking Hyde Park. Refurbishment of the entranceway and reception area included the installation of a new set of signage and canopy plinth. Polished Brass box letters were manufactured and finished in a black chrome to give it a blackened steel finish. These were mounted to an integral steel plinth, which itself was affixed to the entrance way canopy. The result is a eye-catching bold statement.

Bang and Olufsen

Bang & Olufsen have a philosophy that puts design at the centre of their business. It extends beyond product design and into all areas where customers interact with their brand. To make a success of its shop fronts, NES thought like B&O: it's not just a shop front, it's everything. The designers at B&O wanted ribbons of Satin Black intersecting a tiled facade with the material specified as Dibond, because of its flawless finish, the designers turned to NES to help them realise their design. The individual tiles were fabricated either traditional CNC techniques or as with the case for the curved bricks, formed and rolled from a single sheet of Dibond. This eliminated any jointing problems and kept the fold radius of both type of brick consistent across the facade. The effect is a perfect reflection of B&O design: simply stunning.
